Learning objectives

By the end of this experience the learner can:

  • Locate the anatomical landmarks for thigh skinfold: vertical fold on the anterior midline of the thigh, midway between the inguinal crease and the patella, weight on the other leg.
  • Use the skinfold caliper correctly and read it to the required precision.
  • Position the patient correctly and repeat the measurement to confirm consistency.
  • Record the value with the side measured and compare it with reference ranges.

Procedure steps

  1. Explain the measurement to the virtual patient and position them as required.
  2. Palpate and mark the landmarks (vertical fold on the anterior midline of the thigh, midway between the inguinal crease and the patella, weight on the other leg).
  3. Apply the skinfold caliper as demonstrated and take the reading.
  4. Repeat the measurement; if the two readings differ beyond the tolerance, take a third.
  5. Record the mean value and the instrument used.

Assessment

Landmark accuracy, instrument placement and the difference between the learner's reading and the reference value are checked automatically, with a tolerance set by the instructor.

Equipment and setting

Instrument: skinfold caliper. Landmarks: vertical fold on the anterior midline of the thigh, midway between the inguinal crease and the patella, weight on the other leg.
