Infusion Pump VR Nursing Simulation

The learner receives a prescription for a continuous infusion, primes the pump set, loads it into the virtual pump, enters the volume to be infused and the rate, confirms the settings against the prescription, starts the infusion and then handles an occlusion alarm and an end-of-infusion bag change.

Infusion Pump VR Nursing Simulation

Infusion pumps deliver most IV medications in hospital, and programming errors are a leading cause of medication harm. This experience teaches the learner to load the giving set, program volume, rate and duration, respond to occlusion and air-in-line alarms, and change a bag without interrupting therapy, on a realistic virtual pump.

Learning objectives

By the end of this experience the learner can:

  • Prime and load an infusion set correctly.
  • Program volume, rate and time and verify against the prescription.
  • Respond to occlusion, air-in-line and end-of-infusion alarms.
  • Perform a bag change and document the infusion.

Procedure steps

  1. Check the prescription and calculate the rate.
  2. Spike the bag, prime the set and load it into the pump.
  3. Enter the settings, double-check and start the infusion.
  4. Silence and resolve the occlusion alarm by checking the line and cannula.
  5. Change the bag at the end of the infusion and update the record.

Assessment

Programming errors, alarm response time and the resolution steps are scored.

Equipment and setting

Standalone VR headset with hand controllers, full-scale virtual patient and equipment, instructor screen mirroring, Arabic and English interface, offline operation on the campus network.
