First Aid: Bleeding Control · Experience 02

Foot VR Nursing Simulation

The virtual casualty presents with a puncture wound on the sole with heavy bleeding. The learner has to control the bleeding using the technique appropriate for this region: direct pressure, elevation, a pressure bandage that leaves the toes visible, and checking capillary refill in the toes. Blood loss and vital signs respond in real time to what the learner does.

Procedure steps

  1. Check for danger, wear gloves and expose the wound.
  2. Apply the region-specific technique: direct pressure, elevation, a pressure bandage that leaves the toes visible, and checking capillary refill in the toes.
  3. Monitor the casualty's colour, pulse and consciousness for shock.
  4. Keep the casualty warm and reassured and call emergency services.
  5. Record the time of treatment and hand over.

Assessment

Time to effective bleeding control, correct technique for the region, shock recognition and handover quality are scored.
